Buying Guide

Key Features to Look For

• Solar Functionality: For added ambiance, look for feeders with integrated solar lights that charge during the day and illuminate at night, providing an 8-10 hour glow.
• Capacity: Consider the size of the feeder based on how many birds you expect to visit and how often you want to refill it. A 2.5 lb capacity is substantial for most backyard scenarios.
• Durability and Weather Resistance: Opt for feeders made from rust-proof and sun-proof materials, such as metal, to ensure longevity in outdoor environments.
• Ease of Use: Features like “no assembly required” and an easy-to-open top for refilling significantly enhance the user experience.
• Bird Protection: Look for designs that offer shade and rain protection, along with drain holes to keep seeds dry and fresh.
• Squirrel Resistance: If squirrels are an issue in your area, consider feeders with metal construction, which can be more chew-proof.

Important Materials

• The DesGully Solar Bird Feeders for Outdoors utilizes a combination of metal for its primary construction, offering rust-proof and sun-proof qualities, and clear acrylic for the central seed viewing area. The hanging chain and hook are also made of sturdy metal.

Essential Factors to Consider

• Placement: Choose a location where you can easily view the birds, but also where the solar panel can receive sufficient sunlight for charging.
• Seed Type Compatibility: While this feeder is suitable for wild bird seeds, ensure the seed outlets are appropriate for the types of seeds you intend to use.
• Maintenance: Regularly cleaning your bird feeder is crucial for the health of the birds. Look for designs that are easy to disassemble and clean thoroughly.
• Weight Capacity: The feeder’s hanging mechanism should be strong enough to support its weight when fully loaded with seeds, plus the weight of visiting birds. A 30 lb capacity is more than adequate for this feeder.

Budget Planning

Bird feeders can range from very basic models costing around $20 to more elaborate, feature-rich options like the DesGully Solar Bird Feeders for Outdoors, which might fall into the $40-$70 range. Consider the value proposition: a solar-powered, durable, large-capacity feeder often justifies a higher price point due to its added features and longevity. For a gift, this type of feeder offers excellent value and a unique appeal.

When to Buy

Spring and early summer are excellent times to purchase a bird feeder as birds become more active and are raising young, increasing their need for food. However, bird feeders can be enjoyed year-round, and purchasing in late fall or winter can sometimes coincide with sales. For this solar-powered model, ensuring it gets ample sunlight is key, so consider its placement when deciding on the best time to buy and set it up.
