Buying Guide

When selecting a garden hose, especially one designed for heavy-duty use like the Orbit 33180 ExoJacket, several factors are crucial to ensure you get the best performance and value for your needs.

Key Features to Look For

When considering a hose like the Orbit 33180 ExoJacket, prioritize features that enhance durability and ease of use.

• Kink Resistance: A hose that is kink-free is essential for an uninterrupted water flow and a frustration-free experience. This feature significantly improves usability.
• Burst Strength: Look for a high PSI rating, such as the 600 PSI burst strength of this Orbit hose, to ensure it can handle demanding water pressure without failing.
• Material Durability: The hose should be constructed from durable materials that can withstand regular use, exposure to the elements, and being dragged across various surfaces.
• Flexibility and Maneuverability: A hose that is easy to maneuver around obstacles without kinking or tangling makes watering chores much simpler.
• Length and Diameter: Consider the length needed for your space and the diameter, as 5/8-inch is a common and effective size for general use, balancing flow rate and pressure.

Important Materials

While specific material composition isn’t detailed in the provided features, the description “ExoJacket Fabric” and “durable materials” implies a reinforced outer layer designed for protection and strength. High-quality synthetic rubber or vinyl compounds are typically used for the inner tube, and robust fittings are key. Look for hoses that mention reinforced layers or abrasion-resistant exteriors.

Essential Factors to Consider

• Size Requirements: The 100-foot length of the Orbit hose is ideal for larger properties, but shorter lengths are available for smaller spaces. The 5/8-inch diameter is a good standard for flow rate.
• Usage Intensity: For everyday casual watering, a standard hose might suffice. However, for heavy-duty tasks, frequent use, or higher pressure needs, a hose built to withstand more, like this model, is recommended.
• Compatibility: Ensure the hose fittings are compatible with your existing spigots and sprinklers. Most standard hoses use universal couplings.
• Storage: Consider how you will store the hose. While this hose is designed to be flexible, proper coiling and storage will extend its lifespan.

Budget Planning

Heavy-duty garden hoses typically range from $40 to $100 or more, depending on the brand, materials, length, and features. The Orbit 33180 ExoJacket, with its robust construction and high burst strength, likely falls into the mid to upper-mid range of this spectrum. Investing a bit more in a durable, kink-free hose can save money in the long run by avoiding frequent replacements.

When to Buy

The best time to purchase a garden hose is often during spring, as gardening and outdoor watering activities pick up. Many retailers offer sales and promotions around this time. Additionally, look for end-of-season sales in late summer or early fall, as stores clear out inventory. However, if your current hose is failing, don’t wait for a sale – a reliable hose is a functional necessity.
